The Argentine prosecutor's office has asked local cryptocurrency platforms to freeze digital assets collected as part of investments in the collapsed LIBRA memecoin, which became famous thanks to the support of President Javier Miley.
Chief Prosecutor Eduardo Taiano has demanded that social media operators restore deleted posts related to LIBRA advertising, and has also ordered a search of the blockchain for information on transactions with this token since its inception. Law enforcement agencies have already identified one address from which the owner transferred crypto assets worth a total of $4.5 million to a new address.
The prosecutor's office intends to establish who was behind LIBRA and identify crypto addresses associated with it. Chief Prosecutor Taiano is demanding that funds stored at already identified addresses be frozen, and is also sending requests to foreign exchanges and financial institutions for information on LIBRA, seeking to uncover possible money laundering schemes. At the same time, law enforcement agencies are compiling a list of witnesses to collect testimony.
Investors suffered significant financial losses from investments in LIBRA, as the token's value fell sharply immediately after reaching a record market capitalization of $ 4.5 billion. The catalyst for the token's growth was a statement by Argentine President Javier Miley on Twitter that the memecoin would help strengthen the country's economy by financing small businesses and startups. After the token's value fell, Miley deleted his post and denied his connection with LIBRA.
The US Department of Justice is also investigating the collapse of the Libra memecoin, since the damage from the situation could affect American investors in addition to Argentine ones.
